Job Summary

Credit Risk Modelling Team Lead

Location:Cape Town Eastern Suburbs.

We are partnering on an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced Credit Risk Modelling Team Lead to join a growing banking environment and play a pivotal role in building its credit risk capability from first principles.

This is not a maintenance role nor is it a developmental opportunity for someone looking to grow into the function. We are looking for an established Credit Risk professional who has built models strategies and frameworks before can operate with limited oversight and is comfortable taking ownership from design through to implementation and optimisation.

The successful candidate will combine deep technical credit risk expertise with strong commercial judgement and the ability to lead and develop a specialist team.

The Role

You will lead and remain hands-on across the development of the banks credit risk capability including:

  • Developing credit scorecards from first principles including application and behavioural scorecards.
  • Designing and implementing affordability assessment methodologies and models to support responsible credit decisioning.
  • Developing and optimising credit decisioning strategies and frameworks.
  • Designing collections strategies including segmentation treatment strategies and optimisation of collections performance.
  • Developing validating and monitoring IFRS 9 / Expected Credit Loss models including PD LGD EAD and SICR methodologies.
  • Developing and monitoring risk-based pricing models and assessing portfolio profitability.
  • Credit risk forecasting provisioning and portfolio analytics.
  • Establishing appropriate model governance documentation monitoring and validation frameworks.
  • Translating complex credit risk analytics into meaningful commercial recommendations for senior stakeholders.
  • Partnering with Finance Product Collections Technology and other stakeholders to implement credit strategies successfully.
  • Leading and developing technical specialists while remaining sufficiently hands-on to challenge methodologies models and outputs.
  • Continuously monitoring portfolio performance and adjusting strategies as the bank and its lending portfolio evolve.
Qualifications Skills and Experience required:
  • A relevant quantitative degree in Statistics Mathematics Actuarial Science Economics Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 5 years relevant Credit Risk / Quantitative Analytics / Credit Modelling experience with sufficient seniority to independently own the function.
  • Banking experience is essential.
  • Previous leadership / Team Lead experience.
  • Proven hands-on experience building credit risk capabilities models or frameworks from first principles.
  • Demonstrable experience in credit scorecard development not simply monitoring or using existing scorecards.
  • Strong practical experience in affordability analysis and methodology development.
  • Experience developing and implementing collections strategies.
  • Strong IFRS 9 / provisioning experience including PD LGD EAD and SICR.
  • Experience with credit decisioning and risk-based pricing.
  • Strong understanding of portfolio performance forecasting and profitability.
  • Strong SQL skills with experience in SAS Python or R; SAS would be advantageous.
  • Exposure to visualisation tools such as Power BI Tableau or Looker.
  • Strong stakeholder-management skills and the ability to translate highly technical concepts into commercial decisions.

The key differentiator for this appointment is build experience.

We want someone who can demonstrate:

I built it implemented it monitored the results and improved it.

Rather than someone whose experience has primarily involved maintaining validating or operating within an already mature credit risk framework.

You should be comfortable entering an evolving environment where not everything has already been designed for you. Youll need to identify what is required develop the methodology challenge assumptions make recommendations and drive implementation with limited oversight.

You will be commercially minded highly analytical confident in your technical judgement and comfortable taking accountability for important credit risk decisions.
