Set up and operate Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) equipment and oxygen-acetylene gas cutting and welding equipment according to certain welding specifications. Work from blue prints sketches and written or oral instructions. Perform weld examinations by nondestructive methods associated with the inspection of weldments and materials. These examinations are in accordance with procedures engineering drawing and/or specifications. The methods used are Visual and Penetrant examinations. Completes inspection reports attesting to inspection results. Work in the field or shop on a wide variety of non-repetitive welding inspection tasks. Will be certified on specific welding procedures and must periodically re-certify on each.

- Requires high school education with at least five years of experience working as a certified welder.
- This position requires the ability to obtain a Certified Welding Inspector certification from the American Welding Society (AWS) and meet the requirements of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) recommended practice SNT-TC-1A for Level II in Visual Testing and Liquid Penetrant Testing.
- Requires good communication skills and disciplined compliance with Y-12 Conduct ofOperations requirements including but not limited to strict procedure compliance.
- Requires knowledge and experience in the use and interpretation of major welding-related engineering specifications reading blueprints and welding symbols for weldment fabrication and inspection
- Will be required to successfully perform and pass a welding look test on pipe with SMAW and GTAW.
- Capable of meeting the Y-12 Industrial Hygiene requirements for respirator use.
- In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e. High School diploma; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
- Current American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification that can be confirmed by the American Welding Society (AWS).
