Tool Design Engineer – Final Assembly

Job Summary
As part of the Global Manufacturing Engineering team you will design and develop tooling solutions to support final assembly operations across vehicle programmes. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to create efficient ergonomic and cost-effective tooling including lift aids fixtures and inspection gauges. This role combines design engineering manufacturing knowledge and continuous improvement in a fast-paced automotive environment.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop tooling solutions for final vehicle assembly operations including:
- Assembly lift aids for operator ergonomics and safety
- Fixtures for accurate positioning and support of components
- Gauges and checking fixtures for quality verification
- Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD tools (e.g. CATIA V5/V6 NX)
- Collaborate with manufacturing production and supplier teams to define tooling requirements and integrate solutions into assembly lines
- Conduct feasibility studies and design reviews considering manufacturability cost and ergonomics
- Perform engineering analysis (e.g. FEA) to validate design strength and performance
- Define materials components and manufacturing processes for tooling
- Support procurement and supplier development including technical specifications and build tracking
- Troubleshoot tooling issues during pilot builds and production ramp-up
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives for tooling and assembly processes
- Ensure compliance with safety quality and engineering standards
- Maintain accurate design documentation and technical records
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 3 years of experience in tooling design within manufacturing or automotive assembly
- Proficiency in CAD software (CATIA or NX must)
- Strong understanding of:
- Tooling design (fixtures gauges lift aids)
- GD&T and engineering drawings
- Manufacturing and fabrication processes
- Experience with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and suppliers
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Preferred:
- Knowledge of ergonomic design principles and human factors
- Experience with simulation tools (e.g. Simcenter SimSolid)
- Experience with onsite tool / facility implementation & ally
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement
