Purpose of the Job

As part of Sasol International Chemicals Product Safety function you help to secure the longterm marketability of Sasols products with adherence to Product Stewardship and Corporate principles. You support the fulfilment of regulatory requirements the maintenance and updating of toxicological information and the characterisation of new and existing products with respect to their risk using information about hazards to human health and reasonably foreseeable exposures.

Key Accountabilities
  • Providing assistance in ensuring that the products of Sasol Chemicals in accordance with Sasols strategy and objectives can be produced utilised and marketed without posing any risk to humans and the environment
  • Conducting hazard assessments for Sasol Chemicals products
  • Assessing the risk to humans and the environment in connection with the development production marketing utilisation and disposal of Sasols products and if any potential risks are identified developing strategies to mitigate such risks
  • Initiating and monitoring toxicological studies on Sasol Chemicals products
  • Monitoring health effects information and related regulatory developments trends and evaluating their impact on Sasol Chemicals products
  • Coordinating the utilization of outside consulting services for global Product Safety projects such as product registrations and submissions
  • Providing assistance in ensuring and implementing the general framework for safe production and marketing of Sasol Chemicals products taking health safety and environmental aspects as key criteria into account
  • Participating in refining revising and maintaining an emergency system to ensure efficient internal and external (regulators & public) shortterm hazard and risk communication based on substancespecific hazard information in case of unintended emissions to the environment
  • Representing Sasol Chemicals in registration and testing consortia (e.g. REACH) ensuring that Sasols interests are considered
  • Cooperating in the planning and implementation of strategies aimed at ensuring sustained marketability of Sasol Chemicals products in the event of changes in the environmental and regulatory framework
  • Preparing and exchanging information with toxicology and ecotoxicology experts from academia government agencies customers and industry in order to assess the inherent properties of substances with the overall aim of securing Sasols market position in accordance with the principles of Responsible Care
  • Representing Sasols interests in national and international industrial associations as well as science government and industry committees to achieve divisional as well as overall company objectives
  • Monitoring communicating coordinating responses and providing technical assistance to internal and external Sasol Chemicals customers on Product Safety and Occupational Health
  • Actively participates in multifunctional teams to ensure fulfilment of Sasol Chemicals requirements with regard to international chemicals regulation (e.g. REACH)
  • Providing advice to the Production Market Development Marketing Sales (global) R&D SHERQ and Logistics divisions for the purpose of information ensuring the implementation and clarification of regulatory and technical (toxicology/ecotoxicology) issues
Formal Education
  • A university degree in the field of natural sciences (chemistry pharmacology biology) and a postgraduate degree in toxicology (experimental and regulatory) are prerequisites
  • Optionally: A doctoral degree in toxicology is an advantage
Working Experience
  • 3 years experience in the chemical or related industry
Required Personal and Professional Skills
  • English at business proficiency level; German language skills are an advantage
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Presentation skills and experience desirable/required
  • Fundamental knowledge of German and EU chemicals legislation and a general understanding of international laws and related legal areas; product and SAP knowledge can be gained during training
