As a Senior Java Backend Engineer you will be part of a team that focuseson automating and streamlining FlixTrains operational processes creating internal tools that help teams manage a growing and increasingly modern fleet. Youll join a small collaborative team (6 people) with a strong sense of ownership and a pragmatic low-bureaucracy way of working.
The team is part of theFlixTrain Tech division which currently consists of three product teams and is set to grow significantly over the coming year expanding to six teams as FlixTrain continues to scale its operations fleet and supporting technology. The complexity of our operations grows and so does the need for reliable well-designed systems that reduce manual work support regulatory requirements and enable teams to operate efficiently at scale.
This role sits in a greenfield environment where many systems are designed and built from scratch. Engineers are closely involved throughout the entire lifecycle: understanding operational challenges contributing to architectural decisions and ensuring high quality through solid testing practices. We value engineers who are curious about the business eager to participate in discovery and problem framing and comfortable navigating ambiguity.

About the Role
- You will be part of a self-organized cross-functional distributed team owning set of products and will hence directly contribute to the success of the business
- You and your team will place our users at the center when developing solutions together
- You drive the development process using an Agile environment
- You will be able to design new products from scratch and frequently deliver new versions of existing products using continuous integration and automation
- You will work with and learn how to use cutting-edge technologies and tools
- Lead technical decisions inside and across teams to improve technical excellence through lateral leadership
- Be a mentor and coach for your colleagues
About You
- 5 years of professional experience with Java
- Strong experience developing distributed systems using Spring Boot
- Experience with relational (MySQL PostgreSQL RDS) and no-SQL databases (MongoDBDocumentDB)
- Experience with caching solutions such us RedisElastiCache
- Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging services like Kafka/SQS/SNS/RabbitMQ
- Hands-on experience with AWS services ( S3 EC2)
- Experience with DevOps and infrastructure technologies including Docker k8s GitLab CI Terraform and Datadog
- Upper-intermediate level of English or higher
- Experience working within an Agile setup
- Data Engineering skills: ETL Snowflake etc.
- Youve worked with distributed teams before
- Upper-intermediate level of German or higher
