ManagerSr. Manager, Portfolio Development
Copenhagen - Denmark
Job Summary
Do you want to join a global leader in renewable energy infrastructure investmentsCopenhagen Infrastructure Partners is looking for an experienced Manager/Sr. Manager to join the Portfolio Development team in London or Copenhagen.
Team
The Portfolio Development team sits within the Chief Operating Officers function. We work at the early uncertain and often undefined end of the opportunity spectrum developing ideas and shaping commercial initiatives that sit ahead of across or outside individual fund activities.
Our work spans two areas. First early-stage commercial development: working across CIPs fund strategies technologies and geographies to evaluate and develop new business opportunities until they are fund-ready. Second whole-of-firm commercial initiatives: commercial questions and programmes that benefit from a cross-fund cross-geography perspective and dont sit naturally within any single investment teams mandate.
We work across power and energy asset classes and around the world from bioenergy in Asia to offshore wind in Europe to transmission networks in North America to power solutions for data centres. Recent work has spanned developing and entering new markets identifying and structuring partnerships with potential CIP counterparties and taking early-stage project and investment ideas from a blank sheet through to opportunities an investment team can pursue.
Role
As Manager or Senior Manager in the Portfolio Development team you will frame and evaluate early-stage opportunities from first principles structure them commercially and drive them forward until an investment team is ready to take them on. You will own workstreams end-to-end direct junior colleagues and take opportunities into the real world building the internal and external support that turns a thesis into something investable. As we work at the front end of CIPs activities you will often be working with external stakeholders from prospective new partners and counterparties to regulators and government agencies.
Our involvement does not end at handover. Once an investment team takes an opportunity forward we transition into a sparring and supporting role continuing to follow and help mature the opportunity in close collaboration with the investment team.
Responsibilities will consist of but are not limited to:
- Framing and structuring: taking an ambiguous idea question or initiative and turning it into something structured and testable whether that is a commercial thesis on a new opportunity or the design of a cross-firm programme or approach
- Running the underlying analysis yourself: power market fundamentals industry and company analysis policy and macro research and whatever else is needed to really understand the key questions
- Turning theses into tangible pursuable opportunities: identifying the best options for expressing that thesis (target companies greenfield project/market development etc.) and maturing them to fund-ready status
- Building internal and external support behind an opportunity or initiative: working across fund teams partners and counterparties without a direct mandate
- Developing high-quality presentations memos and briefings; suitable for executives with limited adjustments from senior team members
- Supporting senior members of CIP on whole-of-firm commercial initiatives and cross-fund programmes
The candidate
The work we do is both stimulating and demanding. We work across geographies cultures and teams within a high-paced environment where results are demanded. Ideal candidates will be intellectually curious; commercially minded; comfortable with ambiguity and complexity; and capable of working collaboratively but also independently. We are seeking individuals with ideas creativity and a bias towards action.
We look for the following in a candidate:
- 5-7 years of relevant experience with exposure to the energy industry gained in consulting an energy industry player or financial services. M&A experience and financial modelling is a positive but not essential.
- Structured problem solver: understands new issues and topics quickly breaks broad and ambiguous problems into a clear structure and joins the dots between diverse sources of information
- Analytical rigour: sharp analytical mindset with the ability to formulate test and validate hypotheses with a high bar for precision and detail
- Commercial drive: the appetite and ability to build opportunities in the real world; taking a well-researched idea and turning it into an investable opportunity for CIP
- Communication: conveys findings and recommendations clearly and convincingly orally and in writing simplifying complex topics without losing the nuance
- Stakeholder navigation: works fluidly across teams funds and functions building the alignment needed to deliver outcomes without a direct mandate or reporting line
