Engineering Manager
Job Summary
The Engineering Manager (EM) is accountable for technical execution delivery quality and operational excellence for a defined product or service (or where applicable several). This role applies to both product and service product contexts the EM partners with a Product Manager (PM) who owns the roadmap; in service contexts the EM owns the roadmap and delivery accountability. Where applicable the role combines delivery and RUN accountability with people leadership (staff responsibility) managing a team and collaborating closely with business partners to drive outcomes. EM operates at product level within an Area that is part of a Domain or at service level within Enabling Tech. EM has the mandate to make technical decisions that support roadmap and agreed strategies.
Delivery Leadership
- Lead the end-to-end technical delivery for one or several products / services and for service contexts: own the overall service roadmap.
- Enable focus on solving the right problems while balancing delivery with technical health.
- Where applicable collaborate with Product Management roles on roadmap planning release governance and delivery timelines contributing technical feasibility and trade -off insights to ensure value and viability. Where relevant partner with designers to ensure usability.
- Secure appropriate tech resources to meet product/service needs accountable for staffing the delivery teams in alignment with strategic priorities and roadmap.
- Ensure teams are equipped to design build and operate scalable and secure solutions.
- Accountable for delivery quality and timely execution of prioritized work items (e.g. features and epics).
- Ensure documentation of features and solutions is in place and maintained ensuring AI readability and automation where possible.
- May oversee multiple delivery teams. Can where relevant delegate parts of operational delivery responsibility to appropriate team members while maintaining overall accountability and ensuring consistent technical standards and delivery quality across teams.
Operational Excellence
- Drive engineering quality simplification and continuous improvement while ensuring alignment with tech strategy architectural standards and engineering guardrails.
- Define implement and monitor delivery and performance metrics/KPI: s to ensure optimized operations successful business outcomes and drive continuous improvement.
- Ensure operational stability and resilience including incident handling and compliance.
- Lead proactive management of risks dependencies and technical debt.
- Ensure implementation of and alignment with compliance and security standards.
- Support defect tracking and resolution processes to improve engineering performance.
- Own vendor management and operational oversight of SaaS and Managed Service contracts ensuring compliance performance and cost -effectiveness.
Financial Accountability
- Responsible for the tech related costs (budget actual forecast) of the Product/Service. This includes engineering resources tech related services and software licenses as well as ensuring cost allocation.
- Ensure financial discipline and cost efficiency supporting TCO
- Provide input to planning and prioritization to align tech investments with business objectives
People & Culture
- Can hold staff responsibility including recruitment development and performance management.
- Foster a high -performing inclusive and psychologically safe team culture.
- Coach and support team members to grow professionally and increase performance.
- Ensure team members have the right competencies and resources to succeed.
- Manage workload balance and support well-being across the team.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as primary tech contact for the product/service partnering with PM and key stakeholders.
- Collaborate with vendors to ensure delivery quality compliance and contractual alignment.
- Represent the team in cross-functional forums and coordinate with internal stakeholders for alignment on business and tech strategies.
- Ensure transparency and alignment by providing regular stakeholder updates on status progress risks and dependencies (in collaboration with PM for product contexts)
Qualifications :
- Experience as a senior software engineer and/or in technical solution leadership.
- Demonstrated success in leading tech delivery and collaborating with product/business counterparts.
- Proven track record of agile methodologies DevOps and modern engineering practices.
- Proven track record in managing performance in operations (RUN) delivery and security.
- Proficient in Alibaba Cloud infrastructure management including Landing Zone setup account and permission frameworks and cloud-native service management possesses a strong mindset and proven track record in cloud cost optimization.
- Extensive experience in enterprise-level system integration architecture with deep familiarity in diverse interfacing protocols including RESTful APIs GraphQL Message Queues (MQ) and SFTP etc.
- Well-versed in the China e-commerce landscape with experience integrating major platforms such as Taobao/Tmall WeChat and Douyin alongside a solid background in OMS/WMS.
- Experienced in leading the integration of local digital ecosystems with global technology foundations serving as a strategic technical bridge between the local market and global tech centers.
- Knowledgeable in cyber defense and data compliance regulations capable of collaborating effectively with security and data privacy teams to guarantee the robust protection and regulatory compliance of digital systems.
