Structural Vibration Engineer

Thornton Tomasetti is seeking a Senior Engineer to join our Mississauga-based Acoustics Noise & Vibration team. This role is primarily focused on structural vibration assessment design and control for buildings infrastructure and vibration-sensitive environments.

The successful candidate will work across the project lifecyclefrom early design and performance criteria through modelling field testing mitigation design construction support and commissioning. The role is well suited to an engineer who enjoys solving complex dynamic problems working directly with project teams and clients and developing practical solutions that balance performance constructability cost and schedule.

Our work includes the assessment and control of vibration arising from human activity building services equipment transportation construction wind and other sources. Projects may include laboratories healthcare and imaging facilities advanced manufacturing cultural and assembly spaces offices residential buildings long-span structures and other vibration-sensitive environments.

• Lead or independently deliver structural-vibration studies for new and existing buildings and infrastructure.
• Establish project-specific vibration criteria and assessment methodologies in coordination with clients architects structural engineers mechanical engineers equipment vendors and other consultants.
• Perform analytical and numerical assessments of floor and building vibration including modal analysis frequency-response analysis time-history analysis and other appropriate dynamic-analysis methods.
• Evaluate vibration from footfall rhythmic activity machinery HVAC systems transportation construction wind and other sources.
• Plan and conduct field measurements including instrumentation test setup data acquisition signal processing interpretation and reporting.
• Develop and compare vibration-control strategies which may include structural layout and framing modifications mass and stiffness changes damping treatments equipment isolation resilient supports tuned mass dampers and operational controls.
• Coordinate vibration requirements with structural systems architectural layouts floor assemblies equipment supports building services and construction sequencing.
• Apply engineering judgment to translate technical results into clear recommendations that can be implemented by the project team.
• Prepare technical memoranda reports calculation packages specifications design criteria drawings and presentations.
• Review technical work prepared by junior staff and contribute to project QA/QC.
• Mentor Engineers and other early-career staff through technical guidance fieldwork modelling and report development.
• Participate in client and design-team meetings site reviews construction meetings and commissioning activities.
• Support proposals scope development fee preparation interviews and the identification of additional opportunities.
• Contribute to the teams methods tools lessons learned and continued development of structural-vibration practice.

• A bachelors or masters degree in civil structural or related engineering; a degree in applied mechanics physics or a closely related field may also be considered.
• Approximately 510 years of relevant consulting research or applied engineering experience in structural dynamics building vibration or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience independently delivering technical studies and communicating recommendations to clients and multidisciplinary project teams.
• Strong understanding of structural dynamics vibration measurement signal processing dynamic loading and human-perception or equipment-performance criteria.
• Experience developing and interpreting finite-element or other numerical models for vibration assessment.
• Experience with field instrumentation and vibration testing or a strong interest and aptitude for developing this capability.
• Experience designing or evaluating practical vibration-control measures.
• Strong technical writing presentation organization and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments coordinate with others and deliver high-quality work within project budgets and schedules.
• Eligibility for professional registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario; . registration is an asset.
• A collaborative curious and practical approach to problem-solving.

• Experience with structural analysis finite-element data-acquisition signal-processing or scientific-computing software.
• Programming or automation experience using Python MATLAB or similar tools.
• Familiarity with relevant vibration standards guidelines and industry criteria.
• Experience preparing proposals developing client relationships or contributing to business development.
