Part-timesupport opportunity (regular): less than 12-month position (10 monthposition with summer layoff June and July)

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Technician providesacademic technical and operational support for the Faculty of ScienceEngineering and Technology (SET) at the Oshawa Campus. The role is integral tosupporting the delivery of practical laboratory and experiential learning activitiesby ensuring laboratories equipment materials and supplies are preparedmaintained and available to support curriculum delivery and student success.

The Science LaboratoryTechnician supports preparation maintenance and resource allocation for thelaboratories in the Science cluster of programs. This role will work closelywith colleagues to ensure these labs are ready for course delivery across a rangeof science programs and so that students have the best expectation for incumbent will assist the Instrumentation and Science LaboratoryTechnologist:

• In preparing reagents and equipment for teaching laboratories;
• With routine checks on basic benchtop equipment (hotplates pH meters balances etc.);
• With inventory control;
• With instrumentation lab maintenance and unknown sample creation and
• Weekly laboratory safety checks

The incumbent will assistthe Science Laboratory Technologist in the following tasks:

• Preparing media
• Disinfecting biohazardous waste

They will also overseestudents enrolled in microbiology laboratory courses to ensure a safe workingenvironment. They will perform necessary housekeeping duties in a timelymanner keeping the work areas and equipment clean and sanitized. They willadhere to all chemical and biological safety policies ensuring students aresafely disposing contaminated material on the decontamination bench. Inaddition they will adhere to the department Biosecurity plan by ensuring thelaboratory is locked before leaving and that nothing is removed from thelaboratory. They will maintain a thorough working knowledge of all relevantstandard operating procedures (SOPs) the biosafety manual and pathogen safetydata sheets.


Qualifications:

• A minimum of a 3-year diploma or degree in Biotechnology Microbiology Chemistry and Biology or a related field
• Minimum 2 years of recent relevant experience
• Training/experience with Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
• Stoichiometric calculation skills
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and knowledge of the Canadian Biosafety Standard for FacilitiesHandling or Storing Human or Terrestrial Animal Pathogens and Toxins
• Experience working in an analytical laboratory in a biosafety level 2 laboratory
• Experience with chemical reagent preparation and media preparation
• Experience with handling and disposing of biohazardous materials (BSL-2 organisms) and experience with labelling handling identifying and disposing of hazardous chemicals (acids bases solvents etc.)
• Strong analytical and aseptic technique detail-oriented and strong time management skills and ability to balance competing priorities
• Ability to follow SOPs and preparation directions
• Laboratory safety and good laboratory practices (GLP) skills
• Understanding of microbiological terminology standard microbiological laboratory practices and a solid understanding of aseptic techniques
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office to create and format documents and spreadsheets and ability to learn and adapt to new software as the need arises
