Elections Alberta is an independent non-partisan office of the Legislature responsible for administering provincial elections by-elections and referenda. Note: This is a temporary position covering a leave of absence expected to last up to 15 months.
Reporting to the Director Technology Platforms and Innovation the IT Operations Lead is a technically hands-on senior role responsible for the operational delivery of IT services across Elections Alberta. You will own our hybrid Azure and on-premises environment lead the implementation and ongoing management of our IT Service Management (ITSM) solution manage end-to-end IT procurement and asset lifecycle and ensure our technology is operationally ready to support provincial electoral events that can mobilize over 20000 temporary staff across Alberta.
This role requires hands-on management and active involvement in daily operations rather than managing or delegating from a distance. You will be expected to engage directly in infrastructure configuration system administration and hands-on problem resolution while also directing an IT Operations Analyst a managed service provider (MSP) and surge resources during election events.
Responsibilities include:
- Own and optimize the ITSM platform: service catalogue SLA frameworks workflows and service desk performance reporting
- Administer our hybrid Azure and on-premises infrastructure directly including Microsoft Entra ID and Intune
- Manage the full IT procurement cycle for equipment and software licensing
- Maintain a well-organized audit-ready IT asset inventory and warehouse
- Lead IT readiness and deployment for large-scale provincial electoral events working closely with the Manager Warehouse
- Execute security controls and patch management in coordination with our Cybersecurity Lead
- Supervise and develop the IT Operations Analyst
- Hold the MSP accountable to SLA and performance standards

Education and Experience
A post-secondary degree in computer science or a related discipline plus four years of related experience or equivalencies. (A related two-year diploma in computer technology or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution and six years of related experience; or a related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and seven years of related experience.)
Skills and Abilities
You are a hands-on technical leader with demonstrated experience in infrastructure administration cloud operations and endpoint management. You solve complex problems directly communicate clearly at all levels and know how to manage both people and vendors. You bring:
- Direct hands-on ability to administer and troubleshoot hybrid Azure and on-premises infrastructure
- Experience leading ITSM platform implementation configuration and optimization
- End-to-end ownership of IT procurement licensing and asset lifecycle
- Supervisory experience managing direct reports and contracted resources
- Ability to plan and deploy large-scale IT operations for major events
- Strong analytical communication and stakeholder management skills
- Comfort working independently in a fast-paced mission-critical environment
