The Opportunity
WHM Structural Engineers is seeking an Intermediate Structural Engineer to contribute to the design and delivery of structural building projects. Working under the direction of a Project Engineer the Intermediate Structural Engineer completes substantial design scopes coordinates assigned portions of projects works closely with engineering and drafting team members and provides technical guidance to Junior Structural Engineers.
This role is suited to a developing structural engineer who is ready to take greater ownership of their design work strengthen their technical judgment and contribute more actively to project coordination and team development. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a range of structural materials and building types while learning directly from experienced Project Engineers Associates and Principals.
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate is a practical and thoughtful structural engineer with strong foundational design skills and reliable judgment within familiar structural systems and project conditions. They are comfortable completing substantial portions of structural design with moderate independence while recognizing when technical review or additional direction is required.
They are organized detail-oriented and proactive in communicating progress coordination issues and upcoming deadlines. They work collaboratively with engineers drafters consultants and contractors and are interested in supporting the development of junior team members while continuing to build their own technical capability and professional judgment.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete structural analysis and design for assigned portions of building projects with moderate independence under the direction of a Project Engineer.
- Perform gravity and lateral design calculations and develop practical efficient and buildable structural solutions.
- Prepare calculations models sketches markups specifications reports and other technical information for review.
- Coordinate assigned engineering requirements with Project Drafters and Structural Drafters and lead coordination for defined portions of a project when assigned.
- Review drawings models shop drawings specifications calculations and other project information within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Monitor personal workload budgeted hours and deadlines and proactively communicate project status technical concerns and anticipated challenges.
- Participate in coordination with clients architects consultants contractors suppliers and internal project teams on assigned matters.
- Provide technical guidance and informal mentoring to Junior Structural Engineers.
- Support design-related technical questions during construction in coordination with the Project Engineer and Field Services team.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering with a structural focus.
- Registered as an Engineer-in-Training or Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
- Typically 37 years of relevant structural building-design experience; level and compensation will be assessed based on demonstrated capability judgment and independence.
- Experience designing buildings using concrete wood steel or a combination of structural materials.
- Working knowledge of Canadian building codes and applicable material standards.
- Experience completing gravity and lateral structural analysis and design.
- Ability to prepare clear calculations technical sketches markups and design documentation.
- Strong organizational problem-solving and written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience with structural analysis software and Bluebeam.
Compensation and Benefits
$82000 - $103000 per year
Final compensation will reflect the successful candidates relevant experience technical capabilities project coordination experience demonstrated level of independence and alignment with the roles requirements.

This is a full-time office-based position at WHMs Burnaby office.
