Heritage Division manages 20 museums historic sites and Provincial Archives of Alberta; preserves and promotes appreciation for historical buildings fossils archaeological sites and Indigenous heritage sites. The department receives over 2000 submissions annually from developers seeking Historical Resources Act approval for their projects. The Historic Resources Management Branch is part of the Heritage Division.

Responsibilities

This position brings technical and analytical expertise to maintain and support the Historic Resources Management Branchs geomatics program Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related IT infrastructure which are essential to Branch business and services.


The Historic Resources Management Branch is looking for an enthusiastic individual with a strong background in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related data and systems analysis. This is an opportunity to apply your skills in a fascinating and important area of government responsibility the protection conservation and interpretation of Albertas historic resources from houses and churches to tipi rings and rock art.

The Historic Resources Management Branch consists of dedicated professionals with a passion for managing and interpreting Albertas historic resources for the public good. There is considerable room for initiative and creativity as you bring your technical abilities to this collaborative team environment.

As a Geomatics Technologist you will provide specialized GIS data management and technical expertise to support the Historic Resources Management Branchs programs and regulatory responsibilities. Your work will strengthen the reliability of geospatial systems improve access to spatial information and equip internal users and external partners with effective mapping analysis and web-based GIS solutions.

You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Administering and supporting enterprise GIS applications databases web services and related IT infrastructure.
  • Developing and maintaining automated GIS workflows scripts geoprocessing models and data-integration processes.
  • Managing converting and maintaining spatial and non-spatial datasets including metadata documentation security and editing standards.
  • Producing cartographic products spatial analyses imagery processing and geospatial information to support heritage management and regulatory activities.
  • Designing building testing and maintaining web-mapping applications and GIS services for internal and external users.
  • Providing GIS troubleshooting guidance and training to Branch staff and supporting effective use of geomatics tools and data.
  • Collaborating with cross-ministry partners Indigenous communities consultants industry and researchers on geospatial data access exchange and submission requirements.
  • Responding to geospatial data requests while following applicable confidentiality requirements and agreements.
