Disability Services Worker, Part-Time

This program in Edmonton Alberta encourages persons with developmental disabilities to maximize their independence further develop their unique strengths and enjoy community integration through social recreational and community activities.

This program provides support to an older male individual with a mild intellectual and developmental disability. He is semi-independent cognitively aware and frequently accesses and participates in community activities.

The Disability Services Worker (DSW) under supervision of their supervisor facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical behavioural emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community family members guardians and employers. The DSWs will support adults to gain independent living skills including assistance with daily living activities including meal preparation household chores laundry etc. and community access (accessing transportation to educational recreation and community programs/events). They also mentor and advocate for the client and empower them to be self reliant and confident. This position reports to the Team Leader.

Scheduling
Two (2) permanent part-time positions that will work 17.5 hours per week working a two week rotation:
Scheduled hours are 1200-1700
Position 1 Week 1:Monday Tuesday Friday and Saturday. Week 2: Sunday Wednesday and Thursday
Position 2 Week 1: Sunday Wednesday and Thursday Week 2: Monday Tuesday Friday and Saturday

Bona Fide Occupational Requirement (BFOR): This is a gender-specific position based upon the behaviour and needs of the persons served.

Support individuals with household chores life skills personal hygiene (if needed).
Provide supports as per the individuals care plan
Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to deal with behaviours
Administer medication first aid if/when necessary.
Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client

*** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.

Previous experience providing specialized supports such as FASD drug and alcohol addictions intergenerational trauma mental health suicide and other behavioural issues.
A positive role model; calm confident patient self motivated and motivates others
Strong communication and relationship-building skills who can set & maintain healthy boundaries.
MUST HAVE Valid class 5 driver license suitable driving abstract and reliable vehicle
High School or GED Diploma

ALSO helpful but will train if needed:
First Aid/CPR Certification
Crisis Prevention Intervention Medication Administration Abuse Protocol Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies Foundations and Disabilities Training
Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety as appropriate.
