Deckhand, Marine Operations

POSITION SUMMARY

The Deckhand Marine Operations works aboard the AMWAAL Charles Hays and any other Harbour Patrol vessels as directed by the Supervisor Marine Operations. The Deckhand Marine Operations performs hands-on vessel duties including line handling bridge watch security and maintenance tasks while assisting with marine safety environmental protection and stakeholder support across the port. This role performs job duties professionally and with a focus on safety ensuring the safe and efficient operation of PRPA vessels and the effective enforcement of applicable regulations policies and procedures in the Port of Prince Rupert.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Functions as Deckhand aboard PRPA Harbour Patrol vessels performing line handling bridge watch maintenance and vessel operation duties under direction of the vessel Master.
• Acts as Engineer under the supervision of the vessel Master to perform maintenance rounds conduct routine maintenance and respond to engineering emergencies.
• Conducts proactive patrols of PRPA waters ensuring compliance with the Canada Marine Act PRPA regulations and established operational procedures including the Port Information Guide.
• Supports PRPA marine operations including harbour activities port tours VIP transfers environmental monitoring project assessments and other assignments as directed.
• Maintains vessel readiness by conducting preventative maintenance cleaning repairs and by identifying reporting and actioning issues requiring technical support.
• Supports navigational safety by monitoring and assisting in the clearing hazards such as debris flotsam and jetsam from traffic lanes.
• Maintains situational awareness of vessel movements and harbour activity and liaise with Port Security Operations Centre (PSOC) and Marine Communications & Traffic Services (MCTS) for timely information flow during routine and emergency situations.
• Prepares and communicates verbal and written operational reports and vessel logs of all marine operational activities security patrols exercises and drills.
• Responds to emergency situations ensuring the safety and security of the port and providing support to other emergency response agencies.
• Plans conducts and participates in regular drills and exercises both internally and with external stakeholders.
• Supports marine and community events representing PRPA as an ambassador with external stakeholders.
• Responsible for deploying PRPA operational equipment including but not limited to surveillance drones uncrewed surface vessels environmental monitoring equipment and marine firefighting equipment.
• Performs additional duties and special projects as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Works in close quarters aboard vessels and in varied marine environments including rough seas high winds and heavy rain.
• Regular full-time position (averaged 40 hours per week).
• Shift work rotation. One week on one week off.
• Standard work hours are 6:35 AM to 6:00 PM shift times may vary to meet operational needs.
• Modified schedule for training as required.
• On-call coverage may be occasionally required with advance notice provided whenever possible.

• Additional marine training including SVMO (Small Vessel Machinery Operator) Chartwork & Pilot Level 1 Navigation Safety Level 1 and Master Limited (under 60 GT) Certificate of Competency are considered an asset.
• Post-Secondary Education is considered an asset.

Related Experience

• 2 to 5 years of marine or operational experience (e.g. deckhand patrol/workboat harbour operations).

• Proficient with computers and standard software including Microsoft Outlook Word & Excel and
• able to learn new systems and software as needed.
• Commitment to the values mission and mandate of the Prince Rupert Port Authority.
• Able to obtain a valid Marine Medical Certificate from Transport Canada.
• Physically fit and able to work in a variety of adverse weather conditions.
• Able to obtain a security clearance under Transport Canadas Security Clearance Program.
• Possess a valid Class 5 or equivalent drivers license and be willing to provide a drivers abstract.

The base salary range for this role is $82869- $103587. This position is eligible for a performance-based variable incentive targeted at 10% of the base salary.
