Key job responsibilities
Youll own the engineering implementation and evolution of networks that operate at a scale most engineers only read about - and youll define the technical direction for how those networks grow. Your work will span the full lifecycle from architecting and deploying next-generation network infrastructure to ensuring it runs with the reliability and performance that millions of customers depend on every single day.

- Define technical direction and drive innovation for large-scale network infrastructure projects leading strategic network programs across multiple domains including deployment/implementation scaling and optimisation.

- Design and implement network architectures from the ground up establishing patterns and best practices for the organisation.

- Own and drive resolution of complex network challenges that impact strategic customers - troubleshooting with precision resolving with speed and then building the automation that ensures the same issue never surfaces again.

- Develop and execute network automation strategy at scale creating frameworks that eliminate manual undifferentiated work and enable team efficiency.

- Lead multiple high-impact programs simultaneously for AWSs largest partners.

- Establish and influence the technical roadmap for the tools and utilities supporting AWS fleet services.

- Mentor and provide technical leadership to develop engineering excellence within the team - coaching fellow engineers participating in recruitment and conducting reviews.

You wont just maintain what exists - youll invent what comes next. Youll evaluate emerging networking technologies and develop strategies for safely integrating them into our environment and youll serve as a technical advisor across teams building consensus and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders including direct customer interactions. Every solution you deliver will embody the principle of choosing the best approach over the quickest fix - because at this scale shortcuts dont exist.

A day in the life
Your morning begins with a pulse check on the network - reviewing metrics dashboards assessing overnight alerts and confirming that the infrastructure youve engineered is performing as designed. You notice a subtle anomaly in traffic patterns and dig deeper using advanced diagnostic tools to trace the signal through layers of network fabric.

By mid-morning you could be leading a design session on a scaling project that will expand capacity across a critical network segment. The whiteboard fills with architecture diagrams as you guide the discussion weigh trade-offs challenge assumptions and steer the team toward a solution thats both elegant and sustainable. Your colleagues bring diverse perspectives and you help shape those ideas into a clear technical direction the team can rally behind.

After lunch you can shift focus to automation. A recurring operational task has been consuming engineering hours and youve designed a mechanism to eliminate it entirely. Youre refining the code testing edge cases and documenting the approach so others can build upon your work. Later you review a pull request from a newer engineer and pair with them to sharpen their approach - passing on the craft that makes this team exceptional.

Late afternoon brings a customer-impacting event. You move swiftly into troubleshooting mode - methodically isolating the issue applying your deep networking knowledge and coordinating with team members to restore service. Once resolved you lead the retrospective capture the root cause and begin designing the preventive measure that ensures it wont recur.
You end the day knowing that your work - and your technical leadership - directly enables Australias national security community to operate with confidence and that tomorrow will bring an entirely new set of challenges worthy of your talent.

The Network Development team drives engineering implementation scalability operations reliability and sustainability for all of the network fabrics that underpin the software services and platforms used within an AWS region.

- Experience scripting in one or more language (e.g. Bash Python Perl Ruby) or experience in Unix
- Experience in technical support or experience dealing effectively with customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure
- 7 years hands-on experience in a network-focused technical role working with routing protocols/technologies and platforms in large-scale data centre and/or WAN network environments.
- Experience developing engineering deployment or operations mechanisms to support IP networking systems at scale.

- Comfortable discussing network design principles and able to select reasonable platforms to implement designs in large-scale environments
- Understanding of packet flow through network platforms including differences between chassis and pizza-box architectures and shallow vs deep buffer considerations
