Job Summary

Position: Seasonal Character Entertainer
Status: Part-Time; FLSA Hourly Non-Exempt
Department: Guest Experience
Reports to: Manager Guest Experience
Located along the Space Coast in Melbourne Florida the Brevard Zoo is an AZA-accredited facility with a diverse collection of over 900 animals representing nearly 200 species. It is also home to the Sea Turtle Healing Center for rehabilitation of wild marine turtles. Brevard Zoo is well-known for its strong conservation ethic and unique attractions such as kayaking through the Africa area giraffe feeding and rhinoceros and various other animal encounters.

Seasonal Character Entertainers are responsible for bringing Brevard Zoos seasonal evening special events to life by portraying unique characters for both the Halloween (pirate weeping widow farmer etc.) and Holiday (elf nutcracker etc.) events. The ideal candidate is a confident and enthusiastic performer who can fully embody a character engage audiences in both scripted and spontaneous interactions and maintain a high level of energy throughout performances. Performers should be comfortable working outdoors in costume and makeup and in a busy entertainment environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Previous experience working with children or family audiences
PREFERRED/DESIRED:
  • Previous theater or performance experience
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Portray assigned seasonal characters for Halloween and Holiday events in accordance with established character guidelines scripts and performance direction.
  • Perform in scheduled shows walk-around entertainment meet-and-greets photo opportunities and other programming as assigned.
  • Maintain consistent character voice mannerisms physicality personality and appearance throughout appearances.
  • Engage guests of all ages through improvisation storytelling humor and character interaction while remaining appropriate for a family audience.
  • Interact safely and professionally with guests including children and families while maintaining character integrity.
  • Represent the zoo in a positive enthusiastic and professional manner at all times.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to confidently perform for large groups and interact comfortably with individual guests.
  • Ability to improvise while staying within established character guidelines and storylines.
  • Ability to take direction and incorporate feedback quickly.
  • Must be comfortable performing in costumes wigs masks makeup and/or other character elements in an outdoor setting for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand walk dance gesture and perform for extended periods.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
(L) Light work
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects. If the use of arm/leg controls require exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time the job is rated as light work.
POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:
Outdoor working environment most often with frequent exposure to extreme heat and weather conditions. Requires Sitting Standing Walking Bending Stooping Kneeling Finger Dexterity Talking Hearing and Visual Acuity frequently. Must be willing to work in inclement weather including temperatures exceeding 90 degrees and high humidity.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Must be available in the evenings (5pm 10pm) on regular event days including Friday and Saturday
