About the service:
The Medicare Mental Health Services are free and you do not need an appointment referral or Medicare card to visit a Medicare Mental Health Centre. The new services in Devonport Burnie and Outer Hobart are co-funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments to provide a streamlined approach to support better mental health and social wellbeing across the country.
The service is tailored to the needs of the community in Tasmania and provides a combination of peer-led recovery and clinical support.
The Medicare Mental Health Centre provides a safe welcoming and supportive environment for people experiencing psychological distress allowing them to:
- Identify alternatives to presenting to the Emergency Department
- Access support from trained mental health professionals within their community
About the Location:
Glenorchy is a vibrant community located in Greater Hobart metropolitan area. Glenorchy means glen of tumbling waters and is widely known for its mountain backdrop relaxed lifestyle and scenic outdoor adventures. It is nestled on the beautiful River Derwent and within close access to Mount Wellington.
This new Medicare Mental Health Service in Glenorchy will be proudly based in one of Tasmanias most significant buildings that was designed in 1957 by renowned architect Esmond Dorney. The glass building holds a unique butterfly roof and is a well-known local treasure.

Role Overview:
- Mentor and support consumers in a person-led strengths focused and recovery-oriented way to support hope and promote resilience and who models the possibility and longevity of recovery
- Build respectful professional and appropriate relationships with consumers based around conversations which draw from personal experiences and emotions to support people in their journey of recovery
- Inform and contribute to employees learning and service understanding and advocate on systemic issues impacting people living with mental health issues
Requirements:
- Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work or a willingness to complete
- Lived experience of your own mental illness and a rich understanding of your own processes of recovery and proactivity in managing wellbeing
- A willingness to purposefully use your own story to help others further their own understanding of recovery
- Ability to foster and maintain respectful professional relationships with consumers staff and organisations
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and work independently
- Computer literacy
- Must be eligible to apply/currently hold a WWCC
- Must hold/be willing to apply for NDIS worker screening clearance
